The Importance of PTSD & Trauma Diagnosis

Guidelines: Neuropsych Testing for Trauma & PTSD

Neuropsychological testing for PTSD measures the cognitive and emotional patterns that often develop following traumatic experiences. Because trauma affects individuals differently based on the type of trauma, personal history, and individual resilience factors, each client receives a customized, individualized set of assessments best suited to their symptoms, needs, and experiences.

Testing measures cognitive and emotional patterns associated with PTSD such as memory function, attention and concentration, emotional regulation, and trauma-related cognition.

What Are The Signs Of PTSD?

Signs of PTSD may include intrusive memories or flashbacks, nightmares, avoidance of trauma reminders, negative changes in thoughts and mood, hyperarousal symptoms like being easily startled, difficulty concentrating, and emotional numbness. These symptoms must persist for more than a month and significantly impact daily functioning to meet diagnostic criteria for PTSD.

How Do You Evaluate PTSD?

PTSD is evaluated through comprehensive clinical interviews, standardized trauma assessments, neuropsychological testing, and symptom assessment. Our clinical psychologist, Dr. Doshay, gathers detailed trauma history, assesses current symptom severity across all PTSD clusters, and evaluates cognitive and emotional functioning to provide an accurate diagnosis and treatment recommendations.

What Is Included In The Testing Services?

PTSD testing services include an initial phone screening, a comprehensive in-person clinical interview, a neuropsychological testing session, analysis of all results by our clinical team, and a detailed 15-20 page report with findings, diagnoses, and treatment recommendations. Clients also have the option to meet with Dr. Doshay to discuss results and next steps.

Does Insurance Cover PTSD Testing?

Many PPO insurance plans provide coverage for neuropsychological testing when medically necessary. We help clients verify their insurance coverage as part of the screening process and also accept non-insured clients. Contact us to discuss your specific insurance coverage and payment options.

Can PTSD Testing Help With Treatment Planning?

Yes, PTSD testing provides essential information for effective treatment planning. The comprehensive assessment identifies specific symptom patterns, cognitive impacts, and co-occurring conditions, allowing therapists and psychiatrists to develop targeted treatment approaches. Testing results guide decisions about therapy modalities, medication management, and appropriate accommodations for work or school.

FAQs

How do you get tested for PTSD?

Getting tested for PTSD begins with contacting a mental health provider who specializes in trauma assessment. At KMN Psych, the process starts with an initial phone screening. You'll then schedule an in-person evaluation that includes a comprehensive clinical interview, standardized PTSD assessments, and neuropsychological testing to evaluate how trauma has affected your cognitive and emotional functioning. After testing, you'll receive a detailed report with findings, diagnosis, and treatment recommendations.

How much does a PTSD test cost?

The cost of PTSD testing varies depending on the comprehensiveness of the evaluation and your insurance coverage. Many PPO insurance plans provide coverage for neuropsychological testing when medically necessary, which can significantly reduce out-of-pocket costs. At KMN Psych, we help verify your insurance benefits to provide clarity about costs upfront. We also work with non-insured clients and can discuss payment options. Contact us to discuss your specific situation and insurance coverage.

Where to go to get tested for PTSD?

PTSD testing can be conducted by licensed clinical psychologists, psychiatrists, or mental health clinics that specialize in trauma assessment. At KMN Psych in San Diego, we provide comprehensive PTSD testing for children (ages 7+), teens, and adults at our office located at 3760 Convoy Street, Suite 223. Our clinical psychologist and team has extensive expertise in trauma assessment and uses evidence-based measures to ensure accurate diagnosis. We do not require a referral from your primary care provider for testing.

What are the 4 F's of PTSD?

The 4 F's of PTSD refer to the four primary trauma responses: Fight, Flight, Freeze, and Fawn. Fight involves confrontational or aggressive responses to perceived threats. Flight is the urge to escape or avoid trauma-related situations. Freeze occurs when someone becomes immobilized or dissociates during stress. Fawn describes people-pleasing behaviors used to avoid conflict or perceived danger. Understanding your dominant trauma response pattern can be valuable during PTSD assessment and helps clinicians develop targeted treatment approaches that address your specific coping mechanisms.

Does insurance cover PTSD testing in San Diego?

Many PPO insurance plans provide coverage for PTSD testing and neuropsychological evaluation when medically necessary. Coverage varies by plan and may include the assessment, testing sessions, and follow-up consultation. We help clients verify their insurance benefits as part of our screening process and also work with non-insured clients. Contact KMN Psych to discuss your specific insurance coverage and determine what portion of PTSD testing may be covered under your plan.
