Learning Disabilities We Evaluate at KMN Psych

A learning disability, clinically referred to as a specific learning disorder, is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects how the brain processes information in a particular academic area: reading, writing, or math. These are not a reflection of intelligence. Many individuals with learning disabilities have average or above-average cognitive abilities but struggle significantly in one or more specific skill areas, even with adequate instruction and effort.

KMN Psych evaluates for all three types of specific learning disorders recognized in the DSM-5-TR.

dyslexia san diego

Dyslexia

Dyslexia affects how a person recognizes words, decodes unfamiliar text, and comprehends what they read. Someone with dyslexia may read slowly and with significant effort, frequently guess at words, or struggle to connect letters with their corresponding sounds. Reading comprehension often suffers— not because the person can't understand the material, but because reading itself takes so much effort that meaning gets lost along the way.

Dyscalculia

A person with dyscalculia might rely on finger counting long after peers have moved on, struggle to estimate basic quantities, or find that math procedures they've practiced many times still don't stick. Even simple calculations can feel slow and uncertain, and the difficulty tends to become more noticeable as math concepts grow in complexity.

Dysgraphia

A person with dysgraphia may be able to explain an idea clearly out loud but struggle significantly when asked to put it on paper. Writing assignments might take much longer than expected, come back with frequent spelling errors, or feel disorganized even when the person knows what they want to say. Some individuals also experience slow or labored handwriting that makes the process even more frustrating.

What Specific Learning Disorders Testing Can Tell You

A clear diagnosis

A comprehensive evaluation identifies whether a specific learning disorder is present, which type, and at what level of severity. It also determines whether other conditions—like ADHD—are contributing to academic difficulties. For many people, this is the first time anyone has been able to explain what's been getting in the way.

Documentation for accommodations

This is one of the most common reasons people seek testing. Under the Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments Act (ADAAA), individuals with documented disabilities are entitled to reasonable accommodations on standardized tests and in educational settings. A comprehensive evaluation provides the documentation needed to apply for extended testing time, reduced-distraction environments, or alternative test formats on exams like the SAT, ACT, GRE, MCAT, LSAT, and bar exam. Results can also support requests for Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and 504 plans in K–12 settings.

Targeted recommendations

Beyond a diagnosis, evaluation results include specific, individualized recommendations that can guide tutoring strategies, classroom supports, and workplace adjustments — matched to the person's actual cognitive and academic profile.

Clarity when the picture is unclear

Sometimes testing confirms that a learning disorder is not the primary issue, and that something else—attention difficulties, anxiety, a language processing difference—is driving the academic challenges. Ruling out certain explanations is just as valuable as ruling them in, because it redirects support toward the right target.

Who May Benefit From Learning Disability Testing

Your child is struggling despite extra support

They’ve had tutoring, extra time with teachers, or classroom interventions, but reading, writing, or math still feels like an uphill battle. You want to understand why.

Your child needs an IEP or 504 plan, or you or your student needs accommodations for standardized tests such as the SAT, ACT, GRE, MCAT, LSAT, or bar exam. A comprehensive evaluation provides the documentation required under the ADAAA.

You know your child is smart, or you know you’re smart, but academic performance doesn’t reflect it. Testing can identify whether a learning disability is the reason for that gap.

Many adults are never tested as children and spend years compensating. A diagnosis in adulthood can provide clarity and open the door to workplace or academic accommodations.

A teacher, therapist, pediatrician, or school psychologist has suggested a comprehensive evaluation to get a clearer picture of what’s going on.

Sometimes the question isn’t just “is this a learning disorder?” —it’s “is this ADHD, a learning disability, anxiety, or something else entirely?” Comprehensive neuropsychological testing helps sort out overlapping symptoms so support can be targeted accurately.
